The rules of opening and closing tags are the same in HTML5 as were in the previous versions of html. However, in HTML5 opened tags are those that do not have closing tags e.g. <br> and <img>. On the other hand we use the term closed tags for those tags that have their closing tags e.g. <em>, <body> and <head> etc.

The <html> tag is the root element of a HTML5 web page and acts as the container for all other HTML5 tags or elements. In other words all other HTML5 elements are written inside <html> and </html> tags. The <html> tag tells browser that the document is a HTML document.

The following code example elaborates the above:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>HTML5 web page</title>
</head>
<body>
HTML5 web page body
</body>
</html>

We can also use the <html> tag to specify the language of the web page. The following example specifies that the language of the page is English (en):

<html lang= "en" >
